Referendum Dilemma

With barely one week to the conduct of Liberia’s first post- conflict referendum, electorate seem to be placed in a state of agony by politicians and stakeholders who have diverse views about the process. Since the need to conduct the referendum was announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC) several months ago, some political parties including ordinary Liberians have described the exercise as untimely and unconstitutional, claiming that the process is intended to aid President Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf and her Unity Party in retaining state power.
