What appears to be a secret bonus allegedly benefiting Minister Amara Konneh and a selected few has backfired at the Ministry of Finance thereby causing disenchantment among employees.
The Civil Servant Association of the ministry has noted that it is troubled by the form and manner in which Minister Konneh and his Fiscal Management Team have chosen to treat employees of Finance like plantation workers.
A release from the Association said it is repugnant and unprecedented for Minister Konneh and his team to have paid illegal quarterly bonus ranging from 500 to 10,000 United States dollars to scores of select employees, mainly his ( Konneh) political cronies at the ministry.
According to the Association, it has received credible reports that some of the recipients of the huge bonus have already encashed their checks at the Central Bank of Liberia and that some have secured their air tickets to make foreign travels.
The release said “except for Minister Konneh’s nepotistic payment which runs contrary to the Public Financial Management Act, past administrations awarded annual bonus to the ministry’s employees across the board, contingent on merit and not woefully rewarding cronies, some of whom are not regular employees of the ministry”.
The release also said the latest development has created anxiety and apprehension among the workforce of the ministry to the extent that employees are demanding through the leadership of the Association, the rationale behind what appears to be the practice of apartheid payment at the ministry.
Meanwhile, in response to the workers demand, the Executive Committee of the MOF-CSA has resolved to convene a mass meeting at the ministry today, July 30th to address the annoying administrative practice.
When contacted Friday morning, Finance Communication Director Sidiki Trawally said he would response later, noting that he was not well.
Minister Konneh himself could not be reached for comments on the Association’s allegation as he was said to have been out of the country.
