The Joint Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate at the National Legislature on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 aborted hearing on the budget allotment for the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs until President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appoints a minister proper to the entity.
During Tuesday’s budget hearing, Planning and Economic Affairs Deputy Minister for Administration, Dr. Marcus Dahn who appeared before the Joint Chambers of both houses to defend his ministry’s budget was rejected by the Lawmakers insisting that until a minister is appointed there will be no budget hearing for the ministry.
According to the lawmakers, there was no need to allow Deputy Minister Dahn to defend the ministry’s budget when there is no minister to manage the Liberian people money.
Following the 2011 legislative and presidential elections, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf transferred Minister Amara Konneh from the Planning and Economic Affairs Ministry to the Ministry of Finance without appointing a minister to head the ministry.
Since then, he (Konneh) has been serving the two ministries in dual capacities, something that has triggered public outcry.
Although the Executive Mansion said it has introduced a bill to the National Legislature to merge the two ministries, many Liberians including Legislators have been calling on the President to appoint a minister to the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs pending the passage of said bill, but she is yet to adhere to the calls.
